The year 2009 was the year of introducing novelties for the company group Penki Kontinentai. The company was the first to introduce the e-reader in Lithuania as well as to install the first self service terminal and issued the line of products intended for optimizing business processes and created a system connecting a computer with a TV.

Optimization Solutions for the Financial Sector

The company BS/2 held by Penki Kontinentai company group that installs banking technologies has created the product line .iQ. It is the family of business processes management and monitoring products that collects and processes the information necessary for business and optimizes the process of decision making.

“.iQ automates business processes in the company, increases their control quality, and accelerates decision making. Moreover, the solution created by BS/2 ensures the safety of business processes in the company,” said Martynas  Žilionis, the representative for the BS/2.

Ashburn International, another company held by the Penki Kontinentai company group, together with BS/2 introduced the first self service terminals in Lithuania, which are operating in the office of Penki Kontinentai and in the shopping centre Akropolis. The device allows charging the cell phone account, paying for communication services, etc. The advantage of the terminal is economy – if bills are paid using this device, no commission is charged and there are no queues. 

E-book – a Hot Topic

According to the data of 2009, the number of e-readers sold in the USA amounted to 3 million, and the producers of e-books earned USD 46.5 million during the third quarter of last year (USD 13.9 in the same period last year) based on the information of International Digital Publishing Forum.

Residents of Lithuania can purchase e-readers from the autumn of 2009. According to Vaidotas Seneckas, the manager of Penkių Kontinentų Komunikacijų Centras that was one of the first places to trade this equipment, the demand is constantly rising.

“Personal “paper” library can be fitted in the device weighing 220 grams. E-reader is very functional: it "understands" all popular e-formats, holds up to 4 GB information (approximately 12 336 of the books like M. Bulgakov’s “Master and Margarita”, the size of which is 340 KB). Having charged the battery, 10 000 e-pages can be read," said Mr. Seneckas.

Connection of the Computer and TV

The creators of the interactive television Penki TV software solutions have introduced the programme “Home Media Gateway” in 2009. It allows seeing the files stored in the computer on the screen of a TV set without any additional wires or equipment.

“Home Media Gateway” allows transferring pictures, videos, and audio files from a computer to the TV screen quick and simple and controls them by an ordinary remote control. Moreover, own playback can be created or video material, e.g. from Youtube can be viewed. The programme itself changes the format suitable for TV," said Saulius Paukštys, one of the programme creators. 
 

“Home Media Gateway” is just one of the advantages of IP TV Penki TV. The creators of the TV offer almost 80 popular channels to the users of Skynet internet, most HD channels in Vilnius (even 7), virtual video rent and virtual cinema, which broadcasts both Hollywood and non-commercial movies, the internet browser on a TV screen, etc.

Speed of Light

In 2009, the bandwidth of Skynet internet, provided by Penkių Kontinentų Komunikacijų Centras, was increased to 1.5 Gb/s in international networks. According to Jurgita Guobytė, the head of the Commerce Division, the speed of internet depends on the bandwidth.

“As the number of users is increasing, the bandwidth is improved. It ensures required quality of services and high speed. Currently, the speed of Skynet in international networks reaches 25 Mb/s,” said Ms. Guobytė. 

Moreover, during the reconstruction of the network, the equipment in Fabijoniškės region of the capital was renewed.

International and National Evaluation

Last year, several applications of the company group Penki Kontinentai were approved for partial funding from the structural European Union Funds. Thus, the funds will be allocated for training the staff, improvement of provided services and export of the universal software solution PayLo, created by Ashburn International, which offers solutions related to payment cards and loyalty systems.

In 2009, the companies constituting the company group were awarded international certificates. It was not the first time that Penki Kontinentai was awarded the “Microsoft Gold” certificate for professionalism of the employees and usage of Microsoft products in creating projects. And the company “Ashburn International” had the PCI DSS certificate extended, which ensures that the security of payment card data meets the highest standards.

Moreover, according to the sales of 1-3 quarter of 2009, the company group was the leader. In the above mentioned period, the income of the Penki Kontinentai was 83 million litas.
